LMU Campus Day 2026: Confidently choosing the right degree program

28 Jan 2026

What is the right degree program for me? On January 31, 2026, LMU will open its doors and historic lecture halls to prospective students, parents, and teachers.

How does university work and which degree program might suit me? Find the answers at Campus Day.

On January 31, LMU Campus Day 2026 will once again see the main building on Geschwister-Scholl-Platz filled with thousands of prospective students, parents, and teachers from all over Germany. Lectures, taster lectures, and workshops will give them a first impression of what it's like to study at LMU. In an interview, Markus Hünemörder, deputy head of the Central Student Advisory Office, explains what makes Campus Day so special.

Dr. Hünemörder, Campus Day takes place every year. You have been experiencing it for 18 years now. What still excites you about this day?

Markus Hünemörder: It's the best opportunity for prospective students to get to know LMU and almost all of its subjects firsthand, in the historic main building with its unique atmosphere. And then they'll quickly realize: I'm not alone here. There are lots of people here who feel the same way I do. It's the best study orientation event LMU has to offer.

Is there an encounter or feedback from previous years that has particularly stuck in your memory?

I remember the wide variety of visitors and their interests and questions to the Central Student Advisory Service. What can I study with my school-leaving certificate? What should I study? How do I get a place at university? How does the application process work? And how does studying work? But of course, we are not the only ones with answers. The various departments are also represented to answer questions about specific courses of study. In addition, there are many counseling services that talk about studying with children or disabilities, or provide information about the university library and possible stays abroad. And the funding agencies and foundations provide information on financing your studies.

How can Campus Day help to reduce uncertainty or doubts?

That's exactly what it's for. Ideally, you should come with a list of three to five degree programs that you are particularly interested in and talk to the representatives of the subjects or listen to the lectures. Most departments offer a trial lecture or an overview lecture. This helps enormously with orientation and decision-making. Incidentally, psychology and medicine are the most popular subjects. You therefore need to register in advance for these events.

Campus Day begins at 9 a.m. in the Audimax. After a welcome address by the vice president, the Central Student Advisory Service will give the opening lecture: “The Path to Studying.” How did you find your path back then?

I knew very early on that I wanted to study American Studies. But it's perfectly okay not to have a concrete idea yet. For these people, Campus Day is an extremely useful event: it's a huge marketplace of opportunities.

In your experience, which topics are often underestimated but are crucial for choosing the right degree program?

I think it's very important not to rely solely on your own vague ideas about the content, structure, and career options of certain degree programs, but to actually talk to the professionals on site. It's important to get detailed answers to questions about enrollment and admissions. We are also happy to help those who have no idea yet and need some initial guidance. In general: ask as many questions and gather as much information as possible! It's really difficult to get a good and sustainable orientation for your studies through online research alone. A personal conversation is the best method.

What do you hope visitors will take away with them at the end of the day?

I hope that they have made significant progress in their study orientation. This is always a process, and we are really happy to support them in this. The purpose of the campus day is to help them move from vague ideas to a more concrete point, so that the final decision is easier to make.

What if visitors still have questions after the event is over?

No problem at all. The Central Student Advisory Service is always happy to help. The same applies to all other advisory services and the representatives of the various subjects. We welcome any inquiries.
